age 91, Deauville-Trouville, France-died April 21, 1976, Shetland, United Kingdom) English crime writer, novelist, playwright, and short-story writer best known for her detective and mystery novels, which, beginning with the publication of her first mystery novel, The Mysterious Affair at Styles (1920), have sold over 100 million copies worldwide, making her the best-selling novelist of all time. Christie's murder-mystery novels are frequently set in the British coastal town of Manderlay (in the autobiographical novels The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926), The Murder of Roger Ackroyd II (1931), and First Among Equals (1947)) and also in the fictional town of Curtain Call (in the short story collection The Murder of Roger Ackroyd). The most famous of her detectives is Hercule Poirot, the Belgian French-English language private detective created by Christie and first introduced in the short story "The Murder on the Links" in 1921. The character was popular with readers; the series of mysteries about the Belgian detective created a worldwide following, and Christie's success encouraged the development of other detective characters and fiction about them, especially by her friend S. S. Van Dine (The Greene Murder Case, 1929, The Secret of Chimneys, 1934). Other notable Christie detectives include the Scotland Yard inspector Arthur Hastings (The Secret Adversary, 1928), Inspector John "Jock" Weem (The Man in the Brown Suit, 1927), and Major-General Sir Henry Standingham (Death Comes as the End, 1936). She also introduced the character of Miss Marple. Christie's many other works include crime and adventure novels (many featuring her characters Poirot and Hastings), autobiographical novels and short stories (including 12 in the Kit Brown series), children's books, and two novels written with her husband Max Mallowan, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd (1926) and The Murder of Peter Wimsey (1927). She also wrote filmscripts and teleplays (including the Poirot television series) and a one-act play, And Then There Were None (1939). As a playwright, she is best known for the novel and play The Mousetrap, first produced in 1952. Christie was educated at the King's School, Canterbury (1903-1911) and Somerville College, Oxford (1911-1913), where she
